Hii everyone ... hope all are doing good and staying at home safely in this pandemic era covid-19. In this article i would like to tell about that we some may have idea about the kenya and some may not know the strange village in kenya that women can give birth to babies without need of men yes ! you heard that is right that increases curiosity to know about this place and history behind it . Well , villages are the places where we learn about many unknown facts and even more to come across unique cultures & traditions . To our surprise , some places might have history instead of narrating to visitors and one such village is very unique known as Umoja village in Kenya.
It is located in grasslands of sambaru village in Northern Kenya and it's is unique village named "UMOJA" Northern Kenya. The village has been founded in year 1990 only by the women and no men comes here for the last 27 years it seems.
The village started as a sanctuary for 15 women, who were raped by british soldiers in 1990 had been chosen to live in this village. Main cause is due to colonization , this Village has grown to give shelter , livelihood and a life to all women trying to escape from sexual assault &rape , domestic violence, and child marriages. Umoja because Umoja opens its gate to women , men were banned in this village .
By till today there are 250 womens means 50 women and 200 childrens have created an economy for themselves. There are no bells and whistles to their lifestyle but they have earned on regular basis income to take of their essential needs in their lives. If in case if women gave birth to boy , they have to leave the village at age of 18.
The women in this village run by campaign for safari tourists , visiting primary schools, cultural centres and samburu national parks & also charge entrance fee for tourists who visit the village. Women living here make jewellery like necklaces, bangles, anklets and other jewellery items in craft centres and put in sale . The Older women also teaches the younger ones about social norms like female genital mutilation , forced abortions etc, from which they escaped . They also have built a school on Umoja women's land & it's open to nearby villages as well.
The women don't lead an isolated existence . They go out into neighbouring villages, markets , schools but also managed to build themselves as a safe and lead a life as respect.
Meanwhile , number of women living in that village are tremendously increasing and this is how women of the village building their own kingdom.
